QoS support in the UMTS/GPRS backbone network using DiffServ

چکیده
The Universal Mobile Telecommunications System (UMTS) has a number of service classes that require end-to-end QoS support. This requirement imposes on the design of the UMTS backbone bearer service as a part of the UMTS hierarchical QoS architecture. This paper presents a methodology of provisioning QoS in the UMTS backbone network based on the Differentiated Services (DiffServ) model, a relatively simple but scalable IP-based QoS technology. This requires proper choices of QoS mapping, router configurations, and admission control. In this paper, the framework for setting a DiffServ-based backbone router as well as the requisite mapping functions for QoS interworking are addressed specifically for UMTS services. Efficient algorithms are introduced for the router model, particularly for the scheduling and buffer management components, to enhance QoS provisioning in UMTS. The effectiveness of this approach is illustrated by computer simulations.

A Framework for QoS Support in the UMTS/GPRS Backbone Network Using DiffServ
A distinguishing feature of the Universal Mobile Telecommunications System (UMTS) is the support of different levels of quality of service (QoS) as required by subscribers and their applications. To provide QoS, the UMTS backbone network needs an efficient QoS mechanism to provide the demanded level of services on a UMTS core network. This paper presents a methodology of provisioning QoS in thi...

The DiffServ framework has been proposed as a candidate for the provision of QoS support in the UMTS Core Network, not only in the literature but also in the 3GPP specifications. This paper proposes specific traffic conditioning, scheduling and buffer management algorithms for the UMTS Core Network, based on the concepts of the DiffServ framework. Simulations show that the proposed mechanisms c...
متن کاملThe Economics of QoS Allocation Strategies in the Internet: An Empirical Study
The evolution of the Internet as an important communications infrastructure for the public and the convergence of various network services and applications over the Internet have been intensifying the demand for QoS-support in the Internet. The main goal of QoS-support in the Internet is to provide assured network performance relative to the various applications’ needs at reasonable incremental...
متن کاملNext Generation Internet Backbone Router
Next generation Internet backbone node technologies are proposed that offer sophisticated QoS support including real time voice, video streaming, and VPN. The backbone network consists of small size IP + ATM nodes (Type-S) and backbone core nodes (Type-X). Type-S nodes support both ATM bearer and IP QoS services. In addition, the traffic control set between input line card buffer and output lin...
